Bacterial cell are made up of peptidoglycan (NAG and NAM). The
peptidoglycan chains are cross linked with other
peptidoglycan chains by DD transpeptidase or penicillin binding
protein to make cell wall more rigid and support.
Penicillin has beta lactam which binds to DD transpeptidase and
inhibits the cross linking formation of
peptidoglycan and prevent new cell wall formation. Disrupt of cell
wall formation leads to osmotic imbalance inside the cell and leads
to death.
