Who discovered lysozyme and it's antibacterial properties, and what was his original source of the enzyme? What else is he well-known for discovering?
Answer:- Lysozyme (1,4-?-N-acetylmuramidase) is an enzyme that has antibacterial properties. Lysozyme was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1921 when he proved that his own nasal mucus was able to inhibit the growth of a certain strains of bacteria in culture. He found out that this activity in mucus was because of a protein that had ability to lyse bacterial cells. He called this protein lysozyme.
Alexander Fleming is also known for the discovery of Penicillin in 1928, for which he got Noble prize in 1945.
