#1. Normal cells can survive on ATP from glycolysis very well.
True or False?

#2. Stage 4 cancer cells are efficient in ATP synthesis from ETC.
True or False?

Please help and explain. Thank you!

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. #1. False

Glycolysis produces 2 ATP per glucose where complete oxidation through TCA, ETC and oxidative phosphorylation produces 30 ATP per glucose.

So, glycolysis does not produces sufficient ATP to sustain the metabolic needs of most cells. Alternately, normal cells can’t survive on ATP from glycolysis alone for prolonged time.

#2. False.

The cancer cells maintain hypoxia, low O2 level in the tumor cells. So, the cancer cell rely vastly on glycolysis for ATP needs amid hypoxia condition.
