The growing peptide chain is found in which region of the large ribosomal subunit?
Select one:
a. A site
b. P site
c. E site
d. It is found in the small ribosomal subunit
Answer. (B) P site
Once the peptidyl transferase reaction has occurred, the new peptidyl-tRNA in the A-site is translocated to the P-site as the ribosome move exactly 3 nucleotides along the mRNA molecule, going in the 5'-3' direction. This movement is referred to as translocation. This step is mediated by the elongation factor EF-G and is driven by splitting a GTP to GDP.
During elongation process these events repeat. Again, the correct aminiacyl-tRNA is loaded into the A-site of the ribosome as dictated by the A-site codon. A peptide bond is formed between the aminiacyl-tRNA in the A-site and the growing peptide chain is attached to the peptidyl-tRNA in the P-site.
