42. Which of the following mutations would have the most dramatic and longest-lasting effect?

  1. Inactivation of DNA polymerase proofreading
  2. Inactivation of RNA polymerase proofreading
  3. Inactivation of Translational proofreading

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A is the right answer.

The DNA polymerase 3 is responsible for repairing the error prone base pairs. This enzyme repairs the mutated base present in DNA strand during DNA replication. If this enzyme is inactivated, then there is not found repairing of mutated base pair. This will be fixed in the DNA in the cell and mutated DNA pass to the generation.

This mutated base pair is leads to mutation in mRNA also. This will produce mutaed protein always. That's why it is most dramatic and has long lasting effect.

Which of the following is the most likely effect of a mutation in the gene coding for a DNA repair enzyme? - The cell containing the mutation will divide more frequently because the cell cycle checkpoints will not function properly. - Mutations will accumulate more quickly because the cell will not be able to fix errors in replication. - The mutated gene will not be transcribed because RNA polymerase cannot transcribe mutated DNA. - The cell will immediately undergo apoptosis...

Which of the following statements is FALSE? Inactivation of a gene by the insertion of an autonomous DNA transposon is an unstable mutation; the gene can be reactivated by transposition of the element. Nonautonomous DNA transposons are transposons that have mutations in their terminal inverted repeats. Transposable elements can contain genes other than those needed for transposition and still retain the ability to transpose. piRNA is used to block the movement of transposable elements.
