answer the following question with two supporting pieces of evidence

explain the impact the surface area to volume ratio has on a cell

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The surface area to volume ratio tends to decrease with increase in cell size and vice versa. It means a bigger cell would have smaller surface area available to readily pass on substances in keeping with the larger volume as comparer to smaller cell.

In case of smaller cell, the surface area is larger enough to pass on substances in keeping with small volume of cell. That is why when cell grows beyond a certain limit, there are not enough materials that can cross the membrane fast enough to accomodate such a large volume. Therefore, the cell has to divide into smaller cells having favorable surface area to volume ratio.

Hope it helps

The red cell volume RCV (in milliliters) for males is related to surface area S (in square meters) by the following equation.                                                 RCV = 1,486S2 – 4,106S + 4,514. What is the surface area that minimizes the red cell volume, and what is this minimum red cell volume?

A concentration cell is built based on the following half reactions by using two pieces of copper as electrodes, two Cu2+ solutions, 0.125 M and 0.441 M, and all other materials needed for a galvanic cell. What will the potential of this cell be when the cathode concentration of Cu2+ has changed by 0.019 M at 303 K? Cu2+ + 2 e- → Cu Eo = 0.341 V
