explain the impact the surface area to volume ratio has on a cell
The surface area to volume ratio tends to decrease with increase in cell size and vice versa. It means a bigger cell would have smaller surface area available to readily pass on substances in keeping with the larger volume as comparer to smaller cell.
In case of smaller cell, the surface area is larger enough to pass on substances in keeping with small volume of cell. That is why when cell grows beyond a certain limit, there are not enough materials that can cross the membrane fast enough to accomodate such a large volume. Therefore, the cell has to divide into smaller cells having favorable surface area to volume ratio.
