1) Upstream processing: upstream processing step involves chemical hydrolysis, preparation of liquid medium, separation of particulate, air purification, and many other preparatory operations.

2) Bioreaction: After upstream processing, the resulting feed is transferred to one or more bioreaction stages. The bioreactors form the base of the bioreaction step. This step is mainly consists of three operations called, production of biomass, metabolize biosynthesis and biotransformation.
