Which gonad appears to produce the highest number of gametes, the testis or the ovary? Explain your response
Testis produce more number of gametes( sperms) than ovary.
Explanation: Testis produce 200-300 million sperms daily during spermatogenesis. However only half or 100 million of these sperms are viable. On average male will produce 525 billion sperms in their lifetime.
In female, during fetal life, there are about 6 to 7 million eggs( ova). From this time, no new eggs are produced. At birth there will be approximately 1 million eggs or ova and by the time of puberty only about 3 Lakhs eggs remain. Of these only 400 to 500 eggs ovulated during a women's reproductive lifetime. Therefore a developing egg is released each month from puberty until menopause.
