What are the functions of (A) photosystem I and (B) photosystem II? please provide a detailed explanation of each and any important similarities or differences. This is a biochem question so think along those lines when answering. Thank you!
Photosystems are involved in photo synthesis. They are located in thylakoid membrane. They are two types:
1.Photosystem 1
2.Photosystem 2.
These are structural and functional units of protein complexes. The main goal of these photosystems is to produce energy.
Photosystem 1 produces the high energy carriers ATP and NADPH by using light energy.
The photosystem 2 act as a water-plastoquinone oxido-reductase.It is the main function of photosystem 1.
Differences between photo system 1 and 2:
Photosystem 1 absorbs longer wavelength of light which is 700nm.
Photosysytem 2 absorbs shortest wavelength of light which is 680nm.
In photosystem 1 no photolysis occur.
In photosystem 2 photolysis occur.
Photosystem 1 contains chlorophyll and carotenoids.
Photosystem 2 contains chlorophyll, xanthophylls and phycobilins.
Similarities between photosystem 1 and 2:
Both are the protein mediated complexes.
