There's a possible link between prostate cancer and some viruses. Is there a feature of Prostate cancer that can suggest that this cancer has a viral etiology before the virus is identified

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It has been proved trhrough clinical samples of various countries that there is evidence of cause of prostate cancer by the infection of virus.polyomaviruses BKV, JCV, and SV40; human papillomaviruses (HPVs), and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) are involved in the prostate cancer. The intronic long non coding RNA PCA3 and many are markers of prostate cancer.

Genotyping of the sample shows the link of viruses with the cancers. Till now more than 100 pappiloma viruses are linked with the etiology of the prostate cancer but no significant proof is there to show direct colink with the cancer.

BUt, RNASEL (formerly HPC1) mutation cause the risk of prostate cancer that is quite unrelated to the virus infection. However this gene is later discoverd in Virus too. This information shows that the prostate cancer was discovered before the discovery of prostate cancer and virus infection.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a common screening test used for detecting prostate cancer. From Harvard Medical School “Prostate Knowledge” webpage. Is PSA reliable? Although PSA testing can help catch prostate cancer at an early stage, having an elevated PSA (generally considered more than 4 ng/ml) doesn’t necessarily mean that a man has cancer. Noncancerous conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, and prostatitis, can raise PSA levels. In fact, studies have shown that about 75% of...

Most organisms carry their hereditary genetic information as DNA. However, some viruses use RNA instead. The HIV virus has RNA, but its genetic information is found in host DNA. How does this happen? a. An enzyme reverses the usual process, producing DNA from the viral RNA. b. The viral RNA goes through translation in the host cell. c. The viral RNA is actually a variant of DNA. d. Viral RNA attaches to the host’s chromosomes.

You have a patient with prostate cancer. The cancer causes blood vessels to weaken and burst. The patient has a dangerously low Ht and needs a blood transfusion. When you test his blood for type, here are the results: Anti-A- agglutination, Anti-B- agglutination, Anti-Rh- no reaction. 1. List all blood types he can receive. When you enthusiastically suggest that blood transfusions will help him, he protests that his religious beliefs disallow him from accepting transfusions. You will need to find...

Section C – Mutation of SARS-CoV-2 Over Time All viruses accumulate mutations over time, and different classes of viruses have different mutation rates based on the fidelity with which their genomes are replicated. Viral mutations can affect the accuracy of tests, the efficacy of vac- cines, and virulence (the ability to spread, the seriousness of illness, etc.). In this section you will compare a number of sequenced genomes from clinical samples during the first several months of the COVID-19 outbreak...

It is not possible to see very small objects, such as viruses, using an ordinary light microscope. An electron microscope can view such objects using an electron beam instead of a light beam. Electron microscopy has proved invaluable for investigations of viruses, cell membranes and subcellular structures, bacterial surfaces, visual receptors, chloroplasts, and the contractile properties of muscles. The "lenses" of an electron microscope consist of electric and magnetic fields that control the electron beam. As an example of the...

Cohort Study You are an epidemiologist working for the National Cancer Institute. You are asked to design a cohort study to examine the relationship between dietary intake of soy protein and risk of breast cancer. Background Phytoestrogens are a group of plant-derived substances that are structurally or functionally similar to estradiol. There has been much interest in the potential role of phytoestrogens in cancer prevention. Epidemiological data suggest that phytoestrogens may protect a woman from developing breast cancer, and there...
