How do tumor promoters contribute to the development of cancer? How is this process distinct from the role of carcinogens in the initiation of cancer?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

tumor promotors help in spread of tumor and its further growth & proliferation. they are chemical compounds or biomolecules which help in promoting tumor formation they theirself do not play role in carcinogenesis initiation. they promote tumor formation by suppressing functions of tumor suppressors such as p53, BRCA1/2 genes andproteins. they also alter genetic information and promote cell growth of tumor. the tumor promotion has nothing to do with tumor initiation but it play a major role in growth of tumours.

How have our perceptions of cancer development changed? Should we be targeting the “Hallmarks of Cancer” by Hanahan and Weinberg that define cancer (sustaining proliferative signaling, evading growth suppressors, resisting cell death, enabling replicative immortality, inducing angiogenesis, and activating invasion and metastasis), or should the focus be on targeting enabling characteristics that may set the stage for tumor development? Please explain all details, thank you

You are studying a tumor suppressor gene in the cells from a biopsy of a cancer patient and find that these cells lack the activity of the protein encoded by this gene. You proceed to sequence the genome of these cancer cells. To your initial surprise you find that the sequence of the genes encoding this tumor suppressor and all of the genes involved in its transcriptional regulation are undamaged. What could be going on?
