Why it is said that the ribosome is a ribozyme?
Ans. The peptidyl transferase catalytic activity (that forms peptide bond) is an intrinsic part of larger subunit (50S in prokaryotes, 60S in eukaryotes) of ribosome. This catalytic activity of the larger subunit is due to the 23S rRNA in 50S subunit of prokaryotic (70S) ribosome, and 28S rRNA in 60S subunit of eukaryotic (80S) ribosome.
# A ribozyme is an RNA with catalytic activity.
# Therefore, because the peptidyl transferase activity of ribosomes is due to their cognate RNA, ribosomes also act as ribozyme.
