Compare the use of electrons and protons in the electron transport chain, include how each part of an atom contribute to ATP synthesis.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. Electrons and protons are produced in electron transport system from NADH and FADH2. The electrons move in the the inner membrane of mitochondria via oxidation and reduction various electron electron acceptor and this is an energy releasing process. This enegy drives ATP synthesis. The electrons finally reach the terminal electron acceptor i.e. Oxygen. Protons (H+) from NADH and FADH2 are transported out of the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space and move through ATP synthase and enegy created is used in the formation of ATP molecules. H+ ions are ultimately used in the formation of water (H2O) molecules by combining with Oxygen.
