Three cellular organelles necessary for the production and secretion of hormones from a cell are smooth endoplasmic reticulum, rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for the synthesis of non-protein hormones. Cells that are responsible to secrete steroid hormones have lots of smooth ER. In its outer membrane, the rough endoplasmic reticulum contains numerous ribosomes where the protein synthesis occurs. These proteins are stored in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and they are later moved to the Golgi apparatus. Within the Golgi apparatus, proteins are chemically transformed and, when ready, they are put inside vesicles that detach from the organelle. These vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane (exocytosis) in the right place.
