Generalist is trained in a wide range of medicine and medical procedures, whereas a specialist is trained in a specific field of medicine after completing the same basic medical training. Specialist is more efficient in a particular type of disease (or a set of diseases) in compare to generalist. For example: a heart specialist (cardiologist) will be more efficient than the generalist in case of diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system because he/she is trained in this particular field.
