why are general physicians and surgeons not considered to be genetics professional
Many doctors (Physicians and surgeons) are not qualified to explain genetic problems to the patients. It is mainly because the medical schools does not give much importance to genetics in the curriculum. Thus, most of the doctors finds it difficult to explain the genetic test results of the patients.
The medical schools train doctors to be a trained clinicians, not researchers. Very little time is devoted by most of the doctors to do research and in some cases most of them take one or two years off to do research. Several survey studies indicate that doctors refer their patients to genetic counsellors as these doctors are low in confidence to explain genetic reasons to patients.
