What is the purpose of ethidium bromide in agarose gel electrophoresis?
Purpose of ethidium bromide in agarose gel electrophoresis is
that:
It is added to the running buffer solution during the separation of
DNA fragments by agarose gel electrophoresis.
Ethidium bromide binds by intercalating between DNA base
pairs, thus acting as a visualising agent for DNA due to
it's fluroscent property that it shows when illuminated with Ultra
violet light , and the flluorscent images are recorded as
photographs thereby making DNA bands visible. So, we say ethidium
bromide acts as an visualising agent for DNA.
