Which is correct about the electron transport chain (ETC) in the mitochondria?
A) It will oxidize the electron carrier NADH
B) The ETC pumps protons to reduce NAD+ to make NADH
C) Oxygen is generated during the ETC
D) It is found in the matrix
E) The ETC will generate ATP from ADP + Pi
Ans. A) It will oxidize the electron carrier NADH
In ETC there is oxidation of NADH and FADH2 with the help of four protein complexes for the production of energy. Energy is required in ETC for the production of ATP. In ETC , NADH and FADH2 act as the electron carrier. The electron from these carriers moves through the four protein complexes which cause the pumping of protons in the intermembrane space into the cell cytosol. In turn negative charge develops in the matrix and the same amount of positive charge will develop in intermembrane space. This difference in the electric charges will develop an electrochemical gradient, which is responsible for ATP synthesis.
