Pneumonia is caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi. It can be prevented by periodic immunisation in children and routine health check up.

The mortality and morbidity can be reduced by practicing personal hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and environmental sanitation.

The prevalence of pneumonia in United States is around 1.1 million cases per year

Screening of individuals, both adults and children for any respiratory illness is done periodically. School health programs are initiated. Pneumococcal vaccines has been included in the immunisation schedule.
