They are not some wild guess but based on prior experience, scientific background knowledge, preliminary observations, and logic. For example, alpine species are hybrid between other species present in the lower heights.

Theory are are broad explanations for a wide range of phenomena which are concise, coherent, systematic, predictive in nature. They themselves include several hypothesis. For example, the theory of evolution.
