Explain how temperature influences membrane fluidity and composition. Additionally explain how bacteria and fungi which can grow at different temperature adapt to changes in membrane fluidity.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Membrane Fluidity Influences its physiological function Influenced by two major factors : Temperature and lipid composition of the membrane At Low temperature – fluidity is less ? As the temperature increases - the hydrophobic side chains undergo a transition from the ordered state to a disordered one – increase in fluidity The temperature at which the structure undergoes the transition from ordered to disordered state is called the "transition temperature" (Tm).
Fluidity of membrane maintained by : length of hydrocarbon chain degree of unsaturation ? Short chain FA – increase the fluidity Long chain FA– decrease the fluidity unsaturated FA that exist in the cis configuration – increase the fluidity ? More the number of double bonds – greater is the fluidity. Trans FA- decrease the fluidity of membrane

Which of the following is an example of how soil invertebrates affect fungal competition? Selective feeding on some fungi can benefit the non-predated species. Invertebrates can transport fungal spores. Invertebrates that die provide resources/habitat that can become colonized by fungi. Invertebrates can disrupt the soil structure where fungi grow. Which of the following statements is not supported in Crowther et al.(2011)? “Outcomes of fungal interactions are determined by invertebrate grazers” Fungi can not break down wood. How can one experimentally determine that the wildtype and mutant of a bacteria internalize the cell by two different pathways? The bacteria being studied is Arcanobacterium haemolyticum which is a gram positive, non motile rod that causes pharyngitis and other imfections. This bacteria expresses an unusual phospholipase which is proposed to promote bacterial pathogenesis. The wildtype is the normal strain and the mutant has had the pld gene removed. What experiment with controls can be set up to determine that...
