We learned that the information in a DNA molecule (a chromosome) is stored as an arrangement of a sort of alphabet made of 4 letters (A, C, G, T). Suppose that a segment of a chromosome (a gene) specifies how an enzyme should be constructed, and that it normally has the following sequence:
TGGACCCTAGGTAAA
Now suppose that this sequence somehow gets modified to the following sequence:
TGGACGCTAGGTAAA
a) Such a change in the gene’s sequence is known as what? _______________________________________
b) What might the effect of this change be on the how the enzyme is constructed from amino acids? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
c) If the enzyme normally catalyzes some important physiological process, what might the effect be on this process? Why might this happen?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Answer #1

Answer-A this type of mutation is known as point mutation. In this only a single base pair is changed with some other base pair.

Answer-B The code changes from CCC to CGC so there will be a change in amino acid sequences. The proline amino acid will be changed by arginine.

Answer-C The protein formed will be different from the desired protein so it's function will be lost and no physiological reaction will takes place. This might happen because of loss of function of protein.
