What is a desmid’s method of locomotion? What is a diatoms method of locomotion?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Desmid’s method of locomotion is gliding-based

Desmids glide along solid surfaces by secretion of mucilage through cell wall pores.

Mucilage consists of acidic polysaccharides rich in glucuronic acid and fucose. It will also acts as protective layer, function in adhesion

Direction and speed of movement controlled by external stimuli, for example light and nutrient concentration. They can move towards light and avoid too bright light.

Unidirectional movement need continous extrusion of mucilage from only one cell pole.
They move by secretion of mucilage from an apex and moving in the opposite direction.
