(10 pts) List the five stages of meiotic prophase 1 in order. In a sentence or two describe what happens in each phase:
The five stages of prophase 1 in meiotic division are:-
1) Leptotene- In this phase, condensation of replicated chromosomes take place and becomes visible as a two fine threads.
2) Zygotene- In this phase, synapsis of homologous chromosomes take place which means the homologous chromosomes come together to form a pair and it is facilitated by synaptonemal complex.
3) Pachytene- This phase is characterised by thickening and shortening of chromosomes, separation into two chromatids and crossing over ( exchange of segments between chromatids).
4) Diplotene- In this phase, the paired homologous chromosomes begin to separate and chiasmata becomes visible.
5) Diakinesis- This phase is characterised by termination of the condensing of the chromosomes, formation of spindle fibres, disappearence of nucleolus and nuclear envelope.
