State the four main structures of Synapse and the function of each structure

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A synapse can be called the junction between two neurons and it is essential for the transmission of impulses from one neuron to the other.

The 4 main structures of the synapse are

1.Synaptic knob

  • It is formed by the de-myelinated axons at the end of the nerve cell and contains the mitochondria, neurotransmitters packed inside the vesicles

2.presynaptic membranes

  • The presynaptic membrane forms the lining of the presynaptic neuron and it forms the presynaptic vesicular grid.

3. synaptic cleft

  • It is the part between the presynaptic and postsynaptic membranes
  • The space contains the neurotransmitters that are released from the presynaptic end and transfers them to the post synaptic neuron

4.Postsynaptic membrane

  • The postsynaptic membrane contains the receptors for the neurotransmitters..
