Hormones can act on a target cell in different ways. Describe 3 differences between lipid and protein hormones.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans) the difference between these two hormones are as follows:-

1) Lipid hormone are mostly steroid hormones which are usually ketones or alcohols and are insoluble in water whereas the protein hormones consist of polypeptide chain and is soluble in water.

2) the structure of lipid hormones are similar to carbohydrates because they have been originated from them whereas protein hormones has a chain like structure which consists of amino acids.

3) Lipid hormones can diffuse across plasma membranes whereas protein hormones cannot cross the plasma membrane.

4) Example of lipid derived hormones are:- testosterone, cortisol, estradiol and examples of protein hormones are:- epinephrine, thyroxine, melatonin.
