Discuss the significance of the Electron Transport System and the use of oxygen.
Electron transport system plays a vital role in energy production during cellular respiration photosynthesis. Electron donors such as NADH and FADH2, generated during catabolic processes (for example, glycolysis, Kreb's cycle, etc.) donate electrons to the electron transport system. This system consists of a cluster of four complexes, which carries electrons from NADH and FADH2 to the final electron acceptor. Here, oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor and in the process of transfer of electrons to oxygen, protons are pumped across the inter membrane space. An electrochemical gradient is thus established due to proton pumping. This gradient facilitates synthesis of ATP by ATP synthase.
Thus, the electron transport system and the use of oxygen is an essential step in the production of energy in the form of ATP.
