E.coli is the gram -ve, rod shape bacteria ,it is an facultative anaerobe,they are present in the gut,intestine of humans.There are different strains of e.coli.They are non-pathogenic when present in the gut ,but when enters the blood they becomes pathogenic.Not all the strains are pathogenic ,it is contagious they are transmitted through oral or faecal route,by contaminated food or water,undercooked meat etc.,

Common symptoms include : Stomach cramps,blood in stools,diarrhea ,fever,vomiting

Enterotoxigenic E.coli: Increases cyclic AMP causes diarrhoea

Enteropathogenic E.coli: Causes diarrheoa, mostly seen in new borns ,due to faecal contamination.

Enterohemorrhagic E.coli: Causes disease using endotoxin leading to RBC breakdown

Enteroinvasive E.coli: Causes diarrheoa.
