Using pH paper and an anoxic growth chamber, how can you test is bacteria ferments or respires?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

If bacteria respire it would yield acid but if bacteria ferment it would yield alcohol a neutral compound. Generally all fermentive bacteria are anaerobic. So if we incubate the medium with bacterial inoculation in anoxic chamber. After overnight in anoxic chamber we test the medium pH if acid is produced pH paper's color will change then we can conclude the bacteria surely respires. If alchoal is produced the no color change will observed in pH paper we can conclude the bacteria must ferments

You are studying a type of bacteria isolated from the acidic water runoff of a mining operation. You subject two batches of the same bacteria type to different environmental growth conditions. One batch is grown at pH 2, while the other is grown at pH 7. All other environmental parameters are kept identical between the two batches. You then collect their proteins and run a Western blot using an antibody that binds to a proton efflux pump protein (which actively...

If the growth rate of bacteria in a culture medium is directly proportional to the difference between the number of bacteria and a certain optimal number N¯, derive an expression for the number of bacteria n as a function of the time t given that the initial number of bacteria placed in the culture mediam is N0 and that the constant of proportionality is λ.
