  1. Species that become invasive are most likely to have:
    1. Characteristics that are very similar to the native species in the area
    2. Characteristics that are unique compared to the native species in the area

Answer #1

Answer (b) : Characteristics that are unique compared to the native species in the area.

An invasive species is an organism or plant which are not indigenous or native to a particular area. These invasive species cause great harm to economy and environment of the new area. However not all non-native species are invasive.

Example : Digitaria abyssinica, a plant native in tropics, is a very noxious weed because it forms dense mats of grass that suffocate co-occurring species.

The enemy escape hypothesis proposes that: Multiple invasive species are often introduced to a new range simultaneously; these groups of invasive species can compete more intensely with native species than a single species could. Invasive species often inhibit the mutualists of native plants. Invasive species can shift their range more rapidly than native species. Invasive species can become particularly successful in their introduced range because many of their natural “enemies” are absent.
