Life zones refers to zone formation with respect to altitude and vegetation, with each zone containing its characteristic plants and animals.
Alexander von Humboldt observed that wherever similar climatic condition occur in the environment, flora (plants) and fauna (animals) recur in related groupings.
As we move up the altitude, the vegetation and the animals as such tends to change because of a decrease in temperature. Thus, a change in biome can be observed as we move up the altitude, and it is similar to the change in biome (and biotic community) as we move from the equator towards the poles.
