If an earthquake occurs and the two populations of wildebeest can migrate in between herds how would you expect the genotypic frequencies to change?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

If two populations of wildebeest migrate after an earthquake occurs then the genotypic frequencies in both the population will change. This change will occur in the direction of increase in the homogeneity between the two populations thereby decreasing the heterogeneity between the population. The migration allows gene flow to occur between two populations to occur and hence decrease the heterogeneity between the two populations. Thus migration will decrease the heterogeneity in the population and increase homogeneity thus leading to the increase in the genotypic frequency in one genotype among both the population.

A population of Mauna Loa Silversword exists as three separate populations: Population A and B are closely linked such that many individuals migrate between the populations each year. Population C is very far and isolated from A and B such that few, if any, migration occurs. If each population is experiencing natural selection in favor of different alleles, what might we expect to be true of the allele frequencies in each of these populations when compared to each other? Explain....

A new island forms off the coast of Florida after an earthquake. Four squirrels get washed out to the island and survive. How will the genetic diversity of the new island population compare to that of the mainland population? A land bridge forms between the mainland and the new island allowing squirrels to migrate to the island. If continual, large migration of raccoons to the island happens over several generations, how will the allele frequencies of the island population change?...

When an earthquake occurs, two types of sound waves are generated and travel through the earth. The primary, or P, wave has a speed of about 7.99km/s and the secondary, or S, wave has a speed of about 5.17km/s. A seismograph, located some distance away, records the arrival of the P wave and then, 79.8s later, records the arrival of the S wave. Assuming that the waves travel in a straight line, how far is the seismograph from the earthquake?

There are two different, isolated populations of pronghorn antelope. Over 95% of herd A was killed during a disease outbreak, but its population quickly bounced back. Herd B was never exposed to the disease. The two herds currently have equal numbers. A completely different disease is likely to affect both populations this year. Which population would you be more concerned about surviving the disease?

Are these statements true or false 1. Evolution serves a purpose, strives for perfection, or occurs “in order to help a species survive.” 2. Populations and species can evolve over time, but individuals cannot evolve. 3.Two populations are separated, but individuals migrate back and forth about twice a year. In this case speciation will never occur.
