If a cell has 64 chromosomes prior to S and undergoes mitosis followed by cytokinesis , each new daughter cell will have how many chromosomes ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Each new daughter cell will have 64 chromosomes.

During the Mitosis there are various stages having variable number of chromosomes :-

Phase

Chromosome number

Chromatid number
Interphase(2n) 64 64
Prophase(2n) 64 128
Metaphasd(2n) 64 128
Anaphase(4n) 128 128
Telophase(4n) 128 128
Cytokinesis(2n) 64 64

As you can se in the above table during interphase which include the growth phase the cell has 64 chromosome. Similar number of chromosome is also present after the cytokinesis. Thus the same number of chromosomes is found in all of the daughter cells same as of the parent after cytokinesis i.e. 64 chromosomes.

To simulate Telophase and Cytokinesis: Draw the chromosomes decondensing, beside their closest centriole. Draw a new nuclear membrane around each set of chromosomes. Imagine a cleavage furrow developing between each nuclei and separating the cell into two daughter cells.
