The homologous recombination is defined as the recombination between two homologous chromosomes. There is found swapping of gene between two homologous chromosomes. This event is found in pachytene stage of prophase 1 of meiosis 1.

The homologous recombination leads to exchange the gene segment between non sister chromatids. That's why this event leads to increase in the gene diversity in the gametes. The fusion of such gametes provides the more genetic diversity in the population. The homologous recombination is the event which is responsible for producing non identical gametes from the parent cell.
