Transduction is the process of transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to another, mediated by a virus or bacteriophage. When a bacteriophage infects a bacterial cell, it injects it genetic material into its host cells. The virus particle replicates inside the host cell and occasionally packages a portion of bacterial DNA inside its head. The virus particle then lyses the host cell and transfers the bacterial DNA to a new host bacterium upon infection.
