Genetic drift occur when chance events cause change in allelic frequencies in the population.

There are two type of genetic drift :

I. Population bottleneck

II. Founder effect

Population bottleneck : It is when a population size become very small very quickly. It occure due to catastrophic envirnoment events or destruction of habitat. When population size is reduces so quickly, many alleles lost and genetic variation is lost.

Founder effect : It is when few individuals in a population colonize a new location that seperate from old population. This also reduces population size as well as genetic variability.
