Question

Explain the difference between general and regulatory transcription factors.

Explain the difference between general and regulatory transcription factors.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

General transcription factors are required for transcription to occur and regulatory transcription factors use control elements, regulatory elements and regulatory sequences to regulate specific genes during transcription. General transcription factors are crucial for any transcription for all genes. On the other hand, regulatory transcription factors can regulate the transcription of specific genes. In addition, general transcription factors are able to regulate only the housekeeping genes. On the other hand, regulatory transcription factors control all of the other genes.

A gene regulatory protein called ArgP regulates the transcription of enzymes for arginine biosynthesis in the bacterium E.coli. ArgP is an allosteric protein whose activity is modulated by arginine. Upon binding arginine, ArgP alters its conformation and binds more tightly to the regulatory sequence in the promoters of the genes for the arginine biosynthetic enzymes. Does ArgP function as a gene activator or repressor? Explain your answer.
