The first line of defense in the respiratory system are as follows:

1. Cilia or hairs in the nose: These structures protect the entry of large dust particles and bacteria into the lungs. They are trapped and mixed with mucus in the nose.

2. Mucus in nasal cavity: Inhaled bacteria are trapped in the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Mucus along with bacteria reaches the pharynx are finally swallowed into the stomach. This reduces the infection in lungs.

3. Sneezing - It is a reflex action triggered by a nasal irritant. This results in the bursting of air from lungs and causes the removal of a nasal irritant.
