Define: the property that a given t-cell receptor recognizes its peptide antigen only when the peptide is bound to a particular form of mhc molecule
This is defined as MHC restriction.
When foreign proteins are entered into the cell, they are broken down into peptides. They are also called antigenic peptides and are generally derived from bacteria or virus. These peptides are presented to the T-cell by a special class of proteins called major histocompatibility complex (MHC). During the development of T-cells, the immature T cells undergo selection process wherein the T-cell receptor is programmed to NOT TO recognize MHC with self-antigens. This process is called MHC restriction and through this process, MHC can present the non-self antigens to the T-cell receptors effectively.
