Any plastid that has pigment is referred to as chromoplast. Flowers, skin of fruits and even roots may contain chromoplasts. For example carotene is a pigment in carrot due to such chromoplasts in it. Chromoplasts may or may not play a role in photosynthesis.

Chloroplasts can be said to be a specific type of chromoplast. It contains chlorophyll and some carotene and xanthophyll. Chloroplasts are ideally present only in the leaves and play a major role in photosynthesis.
