4. Discuss why Taeniasis, particularly Cysticercosis infections, can occur in populations that neither eat pork nor share environments with pigs. How can such an infection be controlled?
Cysticercosis is one of the disease caused by Taenia solium. It occurs due to ingestion of eggs in food contaminated with human feces. So even those who do not consume pork or share environment with pigs can get it via poor food and water hygiene practices. This is common in developing countries. On the other hand intestinal tapeworm disease occurs due to ingestion of larvae encysted in undercooked pork.
To control cysticercosis and other disease which spread via contaminated food, maintenance of proper food hygiene is necessary especially food handlers should maintain proper hand hygiene. Also proper dispossal of human waste is important measure.
