mitochondria is an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, which is the site of biochemical processes and  respiration and energy production occur in the cell.The exact causes of mitochondrial toxicity can  be Nucleoside Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors, which  interferes with an enzyme needed in the production of mitochondria.

The most commonly observed symptoms are muscle weakness(myopathy).The most severe being lactic acidosis, in which a build-up of lactic acid in the tissues of the body leads to loss of energy, organ failure, and finally death of the individual.
