Describe the effect of glucagon on liver pyruvate kinase and how this affects glycolysis.
Glucagon is a hormone released from α cells of pancreas. It helps in increasing glucose and fatty acids concentration in blood. During low glucose concentration, glucagon increases phosphorylation of pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase and fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase via cyclic AMP (cAMP) and its dependent proteins.
This results in inactivity of pyruvate kinase and decreased recycling of phosphoenolpyruvate which result in decreased glycolysis and increased glucose synthesis.
