what account for occurrence of buttress and stilt roots in some forest plants

Homework Answers

Answer #1

stilt roots are roots which grow obliquely downwards from basal nodes of main stem and fix firmely to the soil .their function is to give additional support to the plant .buttress roots are large wide roots on all sides of a shallowly rooted tree .they are found in nutrient poor tropical forest soils . they may not be very deep but it provides a large surface area for nutrient absorption and also provides support . while stilt roots are mainly found tropical palms growing in shallow wet soil .it facilitate vertical growth to the canopy .most often without increasing stem diameter and underground root structure .it increses the species ability to rapidly exploit light gaps and enhance survival

1. Under the canopy of the taller trees live other plants at the forest floor.  Most of the light that reaches the leaves of the plants on the forest floor is in the far-red wavelengths rather than the red wavelengths. Why? The leaves above reflect most of the green light. Carotenoids in the leaves above absorb the red light. Chlorophyll in the leaves above absorbs the red light. Ethylene contributes to the shade avoidance process. 2. If mostly far-red light reaches...

a.       Many fossil lycophytes were tree-sized plants. It is hypothesized that seed plants now outnumber lycophytes because of the adaptive advantage of the seed, but there may also be an adaptive advantage to the novel vascular tissue arrangement in seed plants. What might be advantageous about the arrangement of vascular tissues in the dicot stems compared to the ancestral condition? Defend your answer. b. Roots might all share this “ancestral” arrangement of vascular tissue because the ancestral condition is...
