This entire process occurs in accordance to some forces.

In the process there is a change in the frequency of alleles responsible for various traits of characters.

This change in the frequency of alleles occurs due to selection advantage in a given particular environment.

Mutations will add changes in the characters, but mutations are not resulted or caused by selection pressure.

Mutations result in changed alleles, but the change in their frequency results due to the selection advantage from the environment.

Thus evolution takes place by change in the frequency of alleles which in turn is resulted by selection advantage from the nature.
