  1. How does the nutrient affect gene regulation in the cells of organs? Please explain by example with detail

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans: Nutrient either directly influences gene expression or indirectly affects the metabolic pathways.

For example, Zinc, vitamin A and D affects gene transcription directly while butyric acid affects gene transcription indirectly. Milk products are a good source of zinc that acts as a trace metal within the body. The occupancy of zinc metal in the transcription factor site is mandatory to increase the rate of transcription. the zinc ion is required for RNA polymerase catalytic activity.

Fatty acids act as a ligand for transcription factors and regulate transcription factor function through protein phosphorylation and ubiquitination.

Explain the principle of “differential gene expression” and how different genes are expressed in different cell types. Describe in detail the two main mechanisms of the transcriptional regulation of gene expression. If you were going to “design” a transcription factor with an unlimited number of protein domains, how would you design this transcription factor so that it could take care of all of the transciptional regulation/expression of the muscle gene myoD.
