Explain the factors that influence the energy balance of a bald eagle

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Energy balance is the relation between energy (food calories) taken in and energy used up for physical and biological activities. Normally bald eagles forage mainly on fish in water bodies like river, ponds, canals etc. During winter when these water bodies are covered with ice, prey availability becomes very low. They will have to move to ice-free water bodies move to upland habitats to feed on fishes that are not commonly eaten by them, or will hunt some terrestrial prey or keep on migrating until they find suitable feeding grounds. Harsh weather condition in winter, stress associated with migration, reduced availability of food etc will put a negative energy balance on bald eagles.

I saw an amazing thing the other day, a bald eagle. The really amazing thing is what the eagle did. He was flying due east at a height of 200 meters and a speed of v = 10m s , carrying a squirming possum. When I first observed him he was 500 meters away from a multistory building. He flew along and then released the possum in such a way that it went in through a second story window, 10...

Determine the deoxygenation rate constant for the reach of Bald Eagle Creek below the wastewater outfall. The average speed of the stream flow in the creek is 30.0 m/d. The depth of the stream is 5.0 m. The bed-activity coefficient is 0.35. The de-oxygenation rate is given by: ?? = ? + (?/ ?) η where kd is the de-oxygenation rate at 20°C (d-1 ), v is the average stream flow velocity (m/s), k is the BOD rate constant (d-1...
