To calculate the amount of diluent, the formula used is :

(Initial concentration)*(initial volume) = (Final concentration)*(Final volume)

1. Make a dilution of 1% from 5%

Suppose final/required volume is 1000 ml

and Initial volume is X.

(5)(X) = (1)(1000)

X= 1000/5 = 200 mL.

For 1000 mL, 200 mL of 5% effluent is required and amount of water needed is 800 mL (1000 - 200 = 800).

2. Make a dilution of 2.5% from 5%

Suppose final/required volume is 1000 ml

and Initial volume is X.

(5)(X) = (2.5)(1000)

X= 2500/5 = 500 mL.

For 1000 mL, 500 mL of 5% effluent is required and amount of water needed is 500 mL (1000 - 500 = 500).
