The three criteria by which the bacteria metabolism could be categorized are following :

I. Phototrophs: these bacteria use light as a source of energy.

II. Chemotrophs: these bacteria use chemical compound as a source of energy.

III. Heterotrophs: these bacteria are dependent on the organism for their food.

The argument against this classification is that bacteria could also divided into one more group which is detrivorous. This group of black feed on dead decaying organic matter.
