Answer #1

TAMs are found in the microenvironment of solid tumours which are mainly involved in cancer related inflammation. They have a very weak ability to present antigen unlike macrophages. They can enhance proliferation, invasion and metastasis of tumor cells; and by stimulating angiogenesis, inhibiting T-cell mediated anti tumor immune response promote progression of tumor.

Whereas

Macrophages are cells of the immune system that phagocytes and digests foreign particles, microbes, cancer cells. They have a vital role in imparting innate immunity and adaptive immunity. They are anti-inflammatory by nature and decrease immune reactions by release of cytokines.

One important role of Fas and Fas ligand is to mediate the elimination of tumor cells by killer lymphocytes. In a study of 35 primary lung and colon tumors, half the tumors were found to have amplified and overexpressed a gene for a secreted protein that binds to Fas ligand. How do you suppose that overexpression of this protein might contribute to the survival of these tumor cells? Explain your reasoning.
